The Football Association is expected to issue a caution to Cody Gakpo regarding his celebrations during Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Gakpo scored during the match that secured the title and removed his shirt to display a vest with the inscription ‘I belong to Jesus’.
As he celebrated lifting the trophy post-match, the Dutch forward again took off his shirt.
Although removing a shirt usually results in a yellow card, Gakpo is under particular scrutiny as his undershirt contravenes the regulations set by the International Football Association Board, which stipulate that ‘Equipment must not feature any political, religious, or personal slogans, statements, or images.’
According to The Mail, Gakpo will not face any additional penalties but will receive a warning from the FA regarding these regulations.
In contrast, Mohamed Salah has escaped punishment for his goal celebration, which involved him taking a phone from a staff member to take a selfie with the Anfield crowd. Both players will be available to complete the season with Liverpool, who will commence their celebration tour with a match against Chelsea on Sunday.
Title contenders Arsenal will subsequently visit Anfield the following weekend, followed by matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace, concluding a remarkable campaign that has seen Liverpool equal Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight English titles.
Gakpo has played a significant role in this success this season, contributing nine goals and four assists in the Premier League.
