Brentford has completed the acquisition of goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher from Liverpool.
Kelleher, aged 26, progressed through the Liverpool academy and made a total of 67 appearances for the team, yet he openly expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the limited chances he received as a starter behind Brazil’s international goalkeeper Alisson.
With just one year left on his contract, Liverpool has opted to sell Kelleher, who has transferred to Brentford for a reported fee of £12.5 million ($16.9 million).
Phil Giles, the director of football at Brentford, stated: “I am very pleased to welcome Caoimhín to Brentford.
We have scouted him in the past and were aware that he had a year to go on his contract with Liverpool this summer.
“When Mark Flekken had the opportunity to move to Bayer Leverkusen, we immediately considered Caoimhín as his replacement.
In addition to being an exceptional goalkeeper, I have seldom encountered a player about whom everyone expresses such commendable remarks regarding his character and personality. Consequently, I am confident that he will be a remarkable addition to the team.
Kelleher dedicated a decade to Liverpool, progressing through the academy system and eventually joining the senior team, initially serving as emergency cover before being elevated to the primary backup position in 2020.
Stepping into Kelleher’s role at Liverpool will be Giorgi Mamardashvili, an international player from Georgia, who has committed to challenging Alisson for a starting position at Anfield.
“I will arrive at Liverpool and give my utmost effort, just as I did during my time at Valencia,” Mamardashvili stated to Geo Team. “I will strive diligently every day, and training alongside Alisson will be beneficial for me.”
