Barcelona secured a decisive victory in the final match of their domestic treble-winning season, triumphing over Athletic Club with a score of 3–0, largely due to a brace from Robert Lewandowski.
Lewandowski’s two goals within the first 20 minutes introduced a touch of excitement to the conclusion of the Pichichi and European Golden Boot competitions; however, as time progressed, it became increasingly evident that Kylian Mbappé would ultimately prevail in both scoring contests.
Mbappé netted nine goals in Real Madrid’s final five La Liga matches.
In contrast, after leading the Pichichi standings for most of the 2024-25 season, a decline in performance coupled with a hamstring injury resulted in Lewandowski entering the season’s last match without having scored a league goal since March.
The Frenchman’s late-season resurgence allowed him to surpass Lewandowski in the Pichichi standings and Viktor Gyökeres in the European Golden Boot race, earning two esteemed individual honors in his inaugural season with Los Blancos.
Following Barcelona’s victory against Athletic, Lewandowski was questioned about narrowly missing out on his second Pichichi award in three seasons with the club.
“I feel a bit disappointed that I couldn’t secure the Pichichi award,” Lewandowski remarked during his post-match interview.
“I found it challenging to regain my optimal form after my injury, but that is to be expected.
“During Barcelona’s title celebrations a week prior, Lewandowski had already expressed that individual awards hold little significance without accompanying team success, emphasizing that the three trophies Barça secured this season are what truly matter.
Despite falling short of achieving his third European Golden Boot and second Pichichi, Lewandowski’s brace allowed him to surpass the 100-goal milestone with Barcelona, becoming the 22nd player in the club’s history to reach this achievement and the fifth fastest, accomplishing it in just 147 matches.
Since rejoining Hansi Flick this season, Lewandowski has returned to being one of the elite center forwards in the sport at the age of 36, and he is set to once again lead Barcelona’s offensive efforts in the 2025-26 season.
