Liverpool chose not to sign Alexander Isak while Jurgen Klopp was at the helm of the club, opting instead for one of their most underwhelming acquisitions for an additional £1 million.
The Reds have rekindled their interest in the Newcastle striker as they aim to enhance their already formidable attacking lineup, which features recent signings Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
Arne Slot is anticipated to part with a British record transfer fee to obtain the 25-year-old’s services; however, had circumstances been different, he would have already secured the Swedish player. Instead, Klopp advocated for a signing that has not met expectations.
As reported by the Daily Express, this is not the first instance of Liverpool considering a transfer for Isak, with the initial interest occurring during Klopp’s tenure. At that time, Isak had a release clause at Real Sociedad valued at £63 million, facilitating a potential transaction.
In the summer of 2022, Liverpool set out to enhance their attacking options, backed by substantial financial resources to support a significant acquisition. Jurgen Klopp, tasked with spearheading this initiative, was central to the negotiations, although he was not working in isolation.
A network of key individuals within the club, including the then-director of research Ian Graham, participated in evaluating the possibilities, yet the two parties could not reach a consensus on the ideal candidate.
Isak was among the contenders receiving serious consideration, with advocates for his signing within the club’s hierarchy. However, Klopp had already been influenced by Darwin Nunez following two standout performances in a Champions League match against Liverpool.
Despite the varying perspectives within the organization, Klopp’s choice ultimately prevailed. Liverpool proceeded with a transaction, paying an initial fee of £64 million to acquire Nunez. That same summer, Newcastle activated Isak’s release clause, leading to his transfer to St James’ Park.
Despite the German manager’s efforts, he struggled to maximize Nunez’s potential, while Isak thrived at Newcastle under Eddie Howe.
Currently, the situation has shifted, with Liverpool appearing eager to recruit the now Premier League-acclaimed Isak and part ways with their existing number nine in preparation for the 2025/26 season.
