Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, has emphasized that a definitive decision regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future with the club has not yet been made.
The team has experienced considerable uncertainty surrounding contracts this season, as Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk all entered the final year of their respective agreements, leaving fans anxious about the potential departure of these key players without compensation.
However, the situation has improved notably in recent weeks with the announcement of new contracts for Salah and Van Dijk.
This development followed reports suggesting that Alexander-Arnold had agreed to a free transfer to Real Madrid.
The arrangements for Alexander-Arnold’s move to Madrid are not believed to be officially concluded, a point Slot reiterated during a press conference prior to Sunday’s match against Leicester City.
“I think you would be surprised if I provided a different answer than I have throughout the season,” Slot remarked when questioned about Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation.
“It has been the same response for hours: we do not discuss these matters until they are finalized, and they are not.”
Reports dating back to February indicated that Liverpool was optimistic about Alexander-Arnold’s emotional connection to the club, especially as Slot’s team approaches the Premier League title.
The extent of Alexander-Arnold’s involvement in the final matches remains uncertain.
He has been out for over a month due to an ankle injury, but there is optimism regarding his imminent return to support the team’s quest for success.
“Trent is recovering from his injury and participated in training with us this week.
He has demonstrated his dedication and showcased his abilities on the field, highlighting his determination to rejoin the team and the Liverpool fans,” Slot stated.
“Anyone who follows football recognizes that he is an exceptional full-back for this club, so we will see what the future holds.
“Trent is not yet prepared to start, but if everything goes well today and tomorrow, he may – just may – be available for the bench against Leicester.
His first training session with the team was on Wednesday, so he is not ready to start, but we hope he can join us. It would be great to have him back.”
