Andy Robertson has shared high praise for Liverpool’s transfer target, Florian Wirtz, while reflecting on his own challenging experience when facing the young star.Liverpool has been in discussions with Bayer Leverkusen regarding Wirtz for several weeks and appears to be nearing the completion of a transfer.
The German club is looking for £126.4 million ($172 million), a figure Liverpool currently finds steep, which is why talks are still in progress.
However, reports from The Athletic suggest that the negotiations are in their “final stages.
”Wirtz has set his sights on a move to Anfield this summer, eager to join the reigning Premier League champions.
Liverpool fans are understandably excited about the potential acquisition of one of the top playmakers in the game.
Left-back Robertson shares in that enthusiasm, openly expressing his delight at the prospect of the deal going through.
“He was fantastic against us [Scotland at Euro 2024], and I certainly remember that,” the 31-year-old told Sky Sports.
“That match [Germany 5–1 Scotland] was incredibly tough for us, but he stood out, creating problems for us in the half-space, making those runs behind the defense. He really has a versatile game.”
“I haven’t had much opportunity to see him in person, but from our matches, it was clear he has the potential to be a top player.
When we faced Leverkusen in the Champions League this year, we controlled the game a little more, which might have made it tougher for him.
Nevertheless, he was outstanding in the German team when we played against them.
Regarding our connection to him, it’s definitely there! You can’t overlook it.
If we manage to bring him on board, we’ll be adding another exciting talent to our roster, and we already have plenty of that.
He’s a really good player, and having him with us would be a big boost. If the transfer goes through, I look forward to playing alongside him.
However, I know that my position in the Liverpool lineup might be challenged next season with another signing on the horizon.
