Jamie Carragher has expressed a controversial and seemingly hypocritical viewpoint regarding the booing of Trent Alexander-Arnold by Liverpool fans during the recent 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
The academy product had announced his intention to depart the club at the conclusion of his contract earlier in the week and was subsequently benched by manager Arne Slot for the highly anticipated match at Anfield.
Alexander-Arnold was brought onto the field with less than thirty minutes left, only to be met with relentless boos from the Liverpool supporters with each touch of the ball.
While Slot and teammate Andy Robertson chose not to criticize the fans for their response, Carragher’s remarks seem to contradict his earlier statements.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ post-match analysis, Carragher called out Liverpool fans for their reaction to Alexander-Arnold making his way onto the pitch while admitting to being surprised by just how many jeers were directed at the 26-year-old.
“That’s the story of the game. That’s what everyone will be talking about.
I’m sure we will be after the game. The back page of every newspaper. I’m surprised by how many.
When you’re in a crowd of 60,000 people, there’s no doubt that there’s a lot of unhappy people in Liverpool about the situation and I’ve said that’s understandable.”
For me, I said before the show and away at Leicester when he came on and there was a few boos from the away section that I don’t believe that any player putting that red shirt on and going out to play for the club should be booed.
I understand there’s a lot of ill-feeling. But I think booing one of your own players when they’re playing is not for me.”
