Trent Alexander-Arnold received a lukewarm welcome from Liverpool supporters as he entered the field during their match against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
The 26-year-old was placed on the bench for the Premier League encounter at Anfield, shortly after announcing his departure from the club upon the expiration of his contract this summer.
With Liverpool leading 2-1 in the 67th minute, Arne Slot opted to bring Alexander-Arnold onto the pitch.
His entrance was met with boos from some fans, and many of his subsequent touches elicited a negative reaction.
Alexander-Arnold has been defended by his manager, Arne Slot, and his teammate and good friend Andy Robertson.
Jamie Carragher has also spoken out and condemned Liverpool fans for their boos.
One man who has suffered similar treatment from Liverpool supporters is Michael Owen.
Owen was once a Liverpool hero, but angered Liverpool fans after leaving the club for Real Madrid and then choosing to join Manchester United later on in his career.He has now given his take and shared exactly how he felt after being booed by Liverpool fans.
Speaking on The Run In on Optus Sport, Owen said: “I know exactly how that boy feels, I felt it myself.
People said it was when I went to Manchester United, it wasn’t at all; when I came back from Newcastle in my first game back at Anfield, I got exactly the same.
“It was only a few, but it was enough to put that knot in your stomach, and I would think if he’s anything like that he’d be walking down that tunnel verging on tears for what he’s done for the club.
I think he’ll be absolutely gutted, his family will be gutted, he is one of them.
It still affects me a little bit to this day, I think he’s been very similar to me, at the academy since he was a tiny little tot, and that club is absolutely in his heart.
“Just because he thinks he should try something different in his life, that won’t take away his love for the club, where his heart is, where he’s grown up.
And then for his own people to boo him, it’s a big lump in your throat.
“I remember sitting in the players lounge after playing against Liverpool for Newcastle, my parents and myself all in floods of tears because I’d just been booed by my own people. I struggle to comprehend it nowadays.
I’m probably the closest person on the planet that knows exactly what it feels like to be in Trent’s shoes now.
He’ll be mortified.”He added: “Trent will leave now, it’s his second to last game, maybe his last game, there were people that booed him and you can’t get that out of your head.
Despite what’s happened for the last 20 years of his life of pure adulation.
“The one thing I remember now is they booed me at the end and it just makes you feel absolutely sick for what you did for the club.”
