Liverpool has been notably active during the summer transfer window. The Reds have broken their previous transfer record by acquiring Florian Wirtz for a fee of £116 million from Bayer Leverkusen, in addition to welcoming both Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong to the club.
Despite already investing £185 million this summer, the club shows no indication of reducing their transfer activities. The Reds are particularly keen on securing a striker, with Alexander Isak being their top priority.
Earlier this week, Liverpool informed Newcastle of their interest in signing their star player, offering approximately £120 million for him. However, Newcastle has no intention of parting with the Swedish international and is aiming to secure him with a new contract.
Newcastle participated in pre-season activities on Saturday afternoon as they made their way to Scotland to compete against Celtic. Isak was anticipated to play, but he was unexpectedly left off the teamsheet.
Initially, it was thought that the Magpies were managing his playing time in preparation for the upcoming season. However, Eddie Howe clarified in his post-match press conference that this was not the case.In his remarks to the media following the match, Howe disclosed that he had sent Isak home due to transfer rumors involving Liverpool. Justifying his choice, he stated, according to the Daily Mail: “I opted to send him home.”
The last thing Alex desires if he is not participating is to be seated in the stands under that level of scrutiny, so if he was not going to play today, we mutually agreed that he should not be present. He continued: “Yes, I have had conversations with him, but that is not unusual. I value a player’s career and its brevity. Alex has been exceptional, he has trained very well, and I understand there will be speculation surrounding him.
“We have several players who are irreplaceable. Your top talents are incredibly difficult to find, recruit, and develop. Therefore, when you possess them, it is essential to cherish them. Naturally, we are eager to retain him as a member of our squad. I find it challenging to provide 100 percent clarity on any player; I would never do that.
“What I can affirm is that Alex is content at Newcastle; he appreciates the players, the staff, and the team. I have never encountered any issues with him, and I am confident he will be here at the beginning of the season.”
Liverpool supporters have responded, with many interpreting Howe’s remarks as an indication that Isak is seeking a transfer to the club. In a discussion on Reddit, one user remarked: “The quotes essentially suggest a player who has expressed a desire to leave but is being denied. I wonder if he will submit a transfer request.”
Another user commented: “I believe Isak’s interest has been piqued, but I doubt it will lead to anything significant; however, Howe’s statements should not provide comfort to Newcastle fans.” A Liverpool supporter expressed: “Strange. He is essentially indicating that Isak wishes to join us. If he were content to remain at Newcastle, he would have been starting and getting match fit.”
