A Liverpool player has been prohibited from changing alongside his teammates because of a stringent regulation enforced across all clubs in the UK.
Liverpool commenced their pre-season activities last weekend with a 3-0 victory against Championship team Preston North End at the Deepdale Stadium.While the primary emphasis of the match was certainly on honoring Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, numerous players delivered exceptional performances during the game.
One of the players is the talented young prospect Rio Ngumoha, who is anticipated to contribute to Liverpool’s defense of the Premier League title in the upcoming season. However, if Ngumoha is to be included in the matchday squad next season, it is probable that he will need to adhere to a strict regulation that prohibits him from sharing a changing room with his Liverpool teammates.
In September of last year, Ngumoha transferred to Liverpool from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee, a move regarded as a significant acquisition due to the 16-year-old’s exceptional talent.
Four months later, Ngumoha made history by becoming the youngest player to participate in an FA Cup match for Liverpool and the youngest to start a competitive game when he was named in the starting XI against League Two team Accrington Stanley. However, to maintain his involvement in Liverpool’s matches, Ngumoha may need to change separately from his teammates, as FA guidelines suggest that players under 18, who are legally classified as children, should not change alongside adults.
While it is understood that this is merely a guideline, last season, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described the rule as ‘unbelievable’ when Ethan Nwaneri was similarly excluded from the Gunners’ changing room.
Discussing his relationship with Arsenal prodigy Myles Lewis-Skelly, who turned 18 six months prior to Nwaneri, Arteta remarked: “When you observe those two [Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri] walking side by side, conversing with one another, there is a connection and chemistry between them.”
I believe for them it is significant because currently, they are still in separate dressing rooms [at the training facility].
Like Arteta is discussing when speaking about Nwaneri, it is easy to forget just how young players like Ngumoha are given the quality and maturity they show on the pitch.
And it remains unclear if Liverpool have implemented this rule in matches that Ngumoha has previously featured in, including the pre-season clash with Preston North End.
