Liverpool has been compelled to implement significant measures following the actions of one of their leading young talents during first team training.
The Reds participated in their initial pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday, achieving a 3-1 victory against Championship team Preston North End.
Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo all contributed to the scoreline on what turned out to be a poignant day for the club.
Both clubs honored Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain during the early hours of July 3.
In light of Jota’s death, the Reds opted to postpone the planned pre-season return dates for several players.
Consequently, there were some first-team absentees at Deepdale, allowing opportunities for some of the club’s youth team players.
Among those was 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, who transferred to Liverpool from Chelsea last year.
At just 16 years and 135 days old, he became the youngest player to start a first-team match for the Reds in an FA Cup third round game against Accrington Stanley in January.
Ngumoha demonstrated that he has continued to develop over the past seven months with another remarkable performance on Saturday.
In January, Anfield Watch reported that Ngumoha had been ‘terrorising’ senior players with his skills since being called up to first team training by manager Arne Slot in October 2024.
It was noted that Slot and his coaching staff had been ‘mesmerised’ by the young talent’s displays, and that Liverpool had even begun removing footage of Ngumoha from their online video series, ‘Inside Training’.
The report suggests that the Reds are ‘carefully managing expectations’ regarding the winger, although interest in the wonderkid is likely to increase if he continues to contribute during pre-season.
According to journalist David Lynch, Liverpool is preparing a new contract for Ngumoha as he approaches his 17th birthday next month, and it remains uncertain whether he will take on a more significant role in the first team next season. Lynch stated: “It’s evident that he’s being groomed for a larger role moving forward.
These [pre-season] matches provide an opportunity to impress and demonstrate that he deserves to make additional appearances this season. He will soon be turning 17, entering that age bracket.”
