Following his assertion of a “sense of power” at Real Madrid, Barcelona president Joan Laporta faced criticism from Xabi Alonso.
Although the next El Clásico is still months away, Real Madrid and Barcelona continue to engage in a rivalry off the pitch. Los Blancos may be competing in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, but the tension between these two Spanish adversaries remains as intense as ever.
At a recent Barcelona event, Laporta further ignited the flames of this historic rivalry, stating to Mundo Deportivo, “Madrid possesses a feeling of power, while we embody a sense of freedom and identity.
“They focus more on acquiring players, whereas we have a greater number of players from La Masia.
“These remarks follow Hansi Flick’s leadership of a youthful Barcelona team, rich in homegrown talent, to a domestic treble.
La Masia alumni such as Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsà were instrumental in the Catalans’ supremacy in Spain this past season, as they triumphed over Real Madrid in four Clásicos across all competitions.
In contrast, Real Madrid did not secure a major trophy during Carlo Ancelotti’s final season, despite the acquisition of Kylian Mbappé as a free agent last summer.
Newly appointed coach Alonso is charged with restoring Los Blancos to their former glory in both Spanish and European football, aiming to surpass Barcelona in the process. His initial challenge arises at the Club World Cup, where he addressed Laporta’s comments during a pre-match press conference.
“I understand the context, and I prefer not to delve into that, but we also have a sense of democracy [at Real Madrid], a sense of freedom, and I assume they have some understanding of being near power as well. It is a reciprocal situation,” Alonso remarked.
Alonso will not have the opportunity to respond on the field until the commencement of the 2025–26 La Liga season. In the meantime, the new manager is dedicated to reclaiming trophies for the Spanish capital.
“[Real Madrid is] the most prestigious team in the world. Its history is self-evident, no matter where you go. This is what elevates Madrid’s greatness,” Alonso concluded.
