Youssoufa Moukoko found himself under scrutiny while still a teenager after being mentioned alongside the greatest player to have ever played the game on multiple occasions.
Making his debut as a 14-year-old at Borussia Dortmund, the forward from Cameroon appeared destined to follow in the footsteps of other exceptional young talents at the club, such as Marco Reus and Mario Gotze.
However, six years later, that prospect now seems to be a distant hope at best.
At just 20 years of age, there remains ample opportunity for Moukoko to regain his early form that led many to believe they were witnessing the emergence of the next world-class talent.
He is now poised to embark on a new challenge after agreeing to depart from Signal Iduna Park.
Moukoko set a record as the youngest player in Bundesliga history when he took to the field for Dortmund just one day after turning 16.
Having impressed with an astonishing tally of 141 goals and 27 assists in merely 88 youth matches, high expectations surrounded the forward.
He was not lacking in self-assurance, as Moukoko expressed his aspirations for his tenure at the club.
He mentioned his ambitions for the Ballon d’Or and the Champions League, sharing with Sport Bild in 2019 (as reported by Mail Sport): The remarkable aspect of this is that many fans and individuals within the sport believed these goals were quite attainable. This reflects the high regard in which he was held.

Moukoko is far from being a contender for the Ballon d’Or, despite being part of the Dortmund squad that reached the 2024 Champions League final.
A disappointing loan period at the French club OGC Nice during the 2024-25 season saw the forward score only twice in 22 appearances, and he is now set to leave Dortmund permanently.

Although Moukoko has gone on to represent Germany on the international stage, he was originally born in Cameroon, which led some to refer to him as ‘the African Lionel Messi.’ Nevertheless, this was not the only occasion on which he was compared to the Argentine legend.
One of Messi’s former teammates, Samuel Eto’o, even suggested that Moukoko could succeed Messi at Barcelona.
In an interview with Goal in 2020, the remarkable forward was the first player that Eto’o thought of when asked who Barcelona should pursue. He stated: Preparing for life after Messi was always going to be a challenging task for the Catalan club, but Eto’o was confident that Moukoko represented the future.
He placed the then 15-year-old among elite company, as he also expressed a desire for his former club to acquire Kylian Mbappe.
Eto’o further remarked: “With Antoine [Griezmann] and Youssoufa [leading the attack], that team would progress very well. [I would like to see] Kylian Mbappe at Barcelona as well.”
As reported by the German publication Sport Bild, the English football clubs Manchester United and Liverpool were poised to compete for the services of the African-born star.
This information surfaced in late 2022, with expectations of a deal being finalized in 2023; however, neither transfer materialized.
Consequently, Moukoko continued his tenure with Dortmund for an additional two and a half years. Nevertheless, according to Fabrizio Romano, the 20-year-old’s time at the Bundesliga club has now concluded.
He has allegedly reached an agreement to join the Danish team Copenhagen. The Danish side frequently participates in the Champions League, yet Moukoko will now encounter a period away from the spotlight.
