Liverpool has scheduled a date for Florian Wirtz’s medical examination in anticipation of a record-breaking transfer.

Liverpool is progressing with the acquisition of Bayer Leverkusen’s standout player Florian Wirtz and is believed to have scheduled a medical examination for the German international.

Following a few unsuccessful attempts, the Reds have reached a significant agreement with Leverkusen, reportedly valued at €136.3 million (£116.1 million, $157.8 million)—a record fee in the Premier League, surpassing Chelsea’s £115 million ($156.4 million) acquisition of Moisés Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023.

Liverpool is anticipated to pay €117.5 million (£100.1 million, $136.1 million) upfront, along with an additional €18.8 million (£16 million, $21.8 million) in performance-related bonuses.

The 22-year-old attracted interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich at the beginning of the transfer window but opted for Anfield as his next destination.

The Premier League champions have had a hectic start to the summer, with a revamp at full-back intended to complement Wirtz’s record-setting arrival.

Liverpool acted swiftly to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold with Wirtz’s Leverkusen colleague, Jeremie Frimpong, and they are poised to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

A significant portion of their summer budget will be allocated to the Wirtz transfer, and Liverpool aims to finalize the deal promptly.

According to The Athletic, Wirtz’s medical on Merseyside is set for Friday, and the Reds are expected to officially announce the 22-year-old’s signing on a five-year contract shortly thereafter.

Wirtz has emerged as a superstar in the Bundesliga after recovering from an ACL tear in March 2022, which sidelined him for nine months.

He played a pivotal role in leading Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic season under Xabi Alonso in 2023–24, contributing to 31 goals in 45 appearances last season.

Throughout this period, the German international has mostly avoided further injury issues.

Although Dominik Szoboszlai made a significant impact from an advanced midfield role last season, Liverpool’s substantial investment in Wirtz indicates that the 22-year-old will be anticipated to quickly adapt and perform at the onset of Liverpool’s title defense.
