Bayern Munich’s director, Max Eberl, has acknowledged that the Bundesliga club was unable to match Liverpool’s financial muscle in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz. Earlier this summer, Bayern showed interest in Wirtz and seemed to have the upper hand initially.
However, Liverpool unexpectedly entered the fray and quickly established themselves as the frontrunners.
After a series of rejected offers, Liverpool has finalized a staggering deal to bring Wirtz on board for €136.3 million (£116.1 million, $157.8 million).
This transfer will mark Wirtz as the most expensive sale in Bundesliga history and could see him set a new Premier League transfer record depending on various add-ons.
Eberl shared his thoughts with Sky Sports Germany, stating, “I’m not sure we could have matched the price Liverpool is now paying.
It was evident that we all saw how exceptional this player is. We could easily envision him donning the Bayern jersey.
Everyone was engaged in the discussions, which went well. But ultimately, Florian chose a different path.
”He concluded by emphasizing how common such decisions are in the transfer market, saying, “That’s just the nature of it.”
Eberl openly expressed his disappointment over missing out on signing Wirtz but maintained that Bayern is well-equipped to thrive without the German talent. “When you first hear the news, you think, ‘Damn,’” Eberl reflected.
“But then you realize that when one door closes, another one opens.“Now, we’re focusing on our future strategy. Florian will undoubtedly shine at Liverpool; he’s an exceptional talent.
However, I remind everyone that we already have remarkable players at our club—Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, and many others.
It would have been great to have another top player join us.
“Nonetheless, we are actively searching for another outstanding player who can help propel us to success.
I’m confident that our squad will remain very strong.
