Trent Alexander-Arnold broke the mold when it came to British players joining Real Madrid, delivering an unexpectedly fluent speech in Spanish at his official unveiling.
After months of speculation about the transfer—which turned out not to be a free move—the former Liverpool fullback was finally introduced to his new squad number and name in the heart of Spain on Thursday afternoon.
Unlike many of his predecessors, Alexander-Arnold chose to make his opening remarks in Spanish when he took the stage.
“Thank you all for this opportunity,” the proud Scouser confidently addressed the packed audience. “Signing for Madrid is a unique experience.
It’s a dream come true. I’m excited to show my game to the Real Madrid fans; I recognize the weight of the responsibility that comes with this club.
I will give everything to showcase my abilities and win many titles. Thank you very much, and hala Madrid!”
Liverpool fans had a rather different reaction. For those supporters still disappointed to lose an academy gem for the minimal fee of £8.4 million ($11.4 million), the overriding reaction was suspicious, to say the least.
When Darwin Núñez joined Liverpool in 2023, Alexander-Arnold admitted that the language barrier was a hurdle he had not yet overcome.
“I know a little bit of Spanish from school, so I am able to speak a little bit and he is learning English which is good,” the England international explained at the time.
“We probably sort of speak part of a sentence in English and then maybe a word he doesn’t know he’ll say in Spanish and hope that I know what it means and then we’ll carry on in English.
“We speak the language of football.
That’s all that matters.”Some Liverpool fans were not so subtle with their view on this gesture.
