The announcement regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure from Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season has caused a significant stir online, prompting Jamie Carragher, a former player for the Reds, to share his succinct four-word response to inquiries about potential external offers.
Alexander-Arnold, who is often regarded as one of the finest right-backs in Premier League history, has dedicated his entire career to the red side of Merseyside.
However, he has recently disclosed that this season will mark his final one, thereby opening the possibility for a move to Real Madrid.
Plenty members of the Anfield faithful feel aggrieved that the Melwood academy graduate is departing on a free transfer, while others have slammed the club for allowing such a situation to come to fruition. All in all, the feeling is one that can be considered frosty.
Now a regular on your television screens thanks to his made-for-consumption personality, Carragher spent the entirety of his playing days at Liverpool – in fact, he hung up his boots as one of the club’s all-time appearance makers, with 737 outings.
Recently, he wrote – from a Scouser’s perspective – about Alexander-Arnold’s next steps in his column for The Telegraph to reveal that he, at the peak of his powers, was quizzed by Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves over a move elsewhere.
“At the peak of my career 20 years ago, I was interviewed by future Sky Sports colleague Geoff Shreeves when he suggested that it might be time to think about moving to a “bigger” club.
“Who’s bigger than Liverpool?” I replied. Geoff sounded surprised by my response.
””‘Bigger [as in] more money? I’m not having that,’ I continued,” the defender-turned-pundit wrote before adding:
“‘If we get it right at this club we will be right back up there.’
When giving that answer to Geoff, it was not meant to sound big-headed.”
Maintaining a slither of modesty, the Bootle-born man then insisted that the likes of Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen were more wanted than he was.
He did, however, suggest that plying your trade for Liverpool is the pinnacle of club football, especially for Scousers.
“There were no offers for me as there were for Steven Gerrard or Michael Owen.
The point then, as it is today, is once you are a mainstay at a club of Liverpool’s stature you are already at the summit of the game.
As a Scouser, for me it does not get any bigger or better.”
Carragher – widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history – is a bonafide Anfield legend.
For his boyhood club, he experienced the highs and lows of being a professional footballer and, throughout his 17-year career at the club, he won a throng of silverware.
Although holding the Premier League trophy aloft managed to evade him by the time that he called it quits, he was part of that Liverpool team who produced one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history – against a star-studded AC Milan, in 2005.
