Arne Slot has disclosed the message he received from Jurgen Klopp following Liverpool’s triumph in the Premier League.
The Reds secured the title with a decisive 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, leading to exuberant celebrations at the final whistle.
Klopp notably guided the club to its inaugural Premier League victory in the 2019/20 season, revitalizing the fortunes of a previously dormant giant.
Slot, his successor, has successfully continued this legacy by clinching the most prestigious title in English football less than a year after his appointment.
The exit of one of the league’s most esteemed managers had many anticipating a transitional phase for Liverpool.
Nevertheless, Slot has now become only the fifth manager to win the Premier League in his first season, joining the ranks of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini, and Antonio Conte.
Less than 24 hours after the title was secured against Spurs, Klopp took to Instagram to write an emotional message to everyone associated with Liverpool. Now, Slot has revealed what his predecessor said directly to him in a text message.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman was asked to name the most famous person to congratulate him on the Reds’ success. To which he replied: “I assume that’s Jurgen.”
Slot then went on to elaborate on the kind words he received from the ex-Liverpool boss:
“What most of them said. Congratulations. Now you know what a special club it is.
Now you are part of history. These kinds of things.”He was really happy for me, for the players, for the staff, for the fans. We all know Jurgen.”
Despite never being seen publicly together, the pair have always seemed to share a good relationship ever since it was announced that Slot would take over once Klopp stood down at the end of the 2023/24 season.
This was evident when Klopp sang his successor’s name after his final game at Anfield, and Slot returned the favour on the same pitch after Sunday’s triumph.
Klopp has already gone on record to say he plans to be on Merseyside for Liverpool’s title parade – which is scheduled for May 26 – although he will be ‘with the people’ rather than involved directly with the players and staff.
