Rio Ferdinand has expressed his opinion on which club he considers to be the foremost in English football following Liverpool’s recent triumph as Premier League champions.
By achieving a record-equalling 20th top-flight title, numerous individuals, including Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, assert that the Anfield team has now established itself as the unequivocal leaders of English football—a title that was once held by Manchester United. In addition to their league title victories, Arne Slot’s team also possesses six European Cups, surpassing any other English club, while United is poised to experience their lowest finish in the Premier League era, currently positioned 14th in the league table.
With many suggesting that the balance of power has shifted, Ferdinand has now conveyed his perspective.
Speaking on his YouTube channel alongside Peter Crouch, Ferdinand insisted that United remain the biggest club in English football despite the contrast in fortunes between the Red Devils and their Merseyside rivals. The pundit went as far as to say the gap wasn’t even close, stating:
“I would say they’re (Liverpool) the most successful club, but not the biggest. It’s a fact. You go anywhere in the world there’s more Man United fans.
That will change if they remain successful and Man United don’t. I think there’ll be a swing of new fans who adopt successful teams.
If Liverpool do that over the next ten years, they have a chance to balance that up.
