Liverpool star Mohamed Salah did not mention William Saliba when asked to identify the two top defenders he has encountered.
Since his arrival at Liverpool in the summer of 2017 for a reported transfer fee of £36.
5 million, Salah has established himself as one of the most outstanding players in the club’s illustrious history.
To date, the Egyptian forward has netted 243 goals in 395 matches across all competitions for the Reds.
In the 2024/25 season, Salah’s impressive record of 27 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League has positioned Liverpool just six points shy of clinching the title.
Throughout his career, Salah has faced numerous elite defenders in European football.
In a statement made in 2023, he highlighted two defenders who particularly impressed him.
As reported by The Echo, Salah shared with Sky Sports:
“There are a few. I would say (Cesar) Azpilicueta was challenging; he eventually played on the right side, but he was tough to face.
“I played alongside Ashley (Cole), and his ability to read the game was remarkable. I faced him when I was at Basel, and his game intelligence was exceptional.
”He continued: “Although he’s not the tallest, his game awareness was impressive, and he was very formidable. He’s a great individual, dedicated in training, and a true professional, which is evident in his career.
”Salah also expressed his desire to play alongside three specific players.He remarked:
“I would choose (Lionel) Messi or (Cristiano) Ronaldo.
If I had to select one from the Premier League, it would be Kevin (De Bruyne).
His vision is extraordinary; I’m confident he could locate me anywhere on the pitch.
I could mention Messi, Ronaldo, or Kevin.“I don’t focus on defending; my aim is to score goals. De Bruyne is an exceptional player, and the entire team is fantastic. I concentrate on my game rather than on anyone else.”
